Legacy
What is the role of an elder?
What has been your contribution to the community?
Who will carry forward your work when you are gone?
Elders in our society are frequently invisible and dependent. We are in our homes with limited physical access to the outside world, in care centers with limited contact with other generations. Physical limitations sometimes prevent others from spending time with us or from communicating with us. We depend on others to do things that we have been used to doing ourselves.
What about a different vision of elderhood? Instead of viewing the physical slowing down as a limitation, what if we envisioned it as an occasion to dwell in a place of reflection, intuition, spirit? A time of sharing our stories and wisdom with others? A time of harvesting that which we have spent a lifetime sowing? What if these years were spent entrusting our legacy to future generations?
Reflect on your life, reap the fruits of your life’s work and pass them on to those who will follow you.
In our 3 sessions together you will
- Make a map of your past: look for the treasures that are there, the difficulties, look for what moved you in new directions, leading to the person you are today.
- Assess where you are today: what are you ready to harvest after a lifetime of planting?
- Determine what you would like to pass on: how can that happen, to whom can you entrust your legacy?
Examples: your history, your photographs, your recipes, your carpentry tools, your card games, your knowledge of how to do something, your knowledge of place, your experiences of dealing with people
Some of the activities we will do together
- sharing stories
- personal inventories
- art activities
- journaling
You are invited to bring to the sessions photographs, writings or other mementos that help to shed light on your life. We will share a snack together, ideally some of your favorite recipes.
